The Life of Music with Nicholas Kenyon
This event is free to watch but please consider donating to Bath Festivals, a registered charity. Your donation will support future festivals and creative learning projects with young people in the local community. Thank you.
Music is nothing until it sounds and is heard. Music lives because it is performed and listened to.
Immersed in music as writer, editor, broadcaster and former director of the BBC Proms, Nicholas Kenyon has long championed composers and performers who widen the repertory and expand our listening.
This inclusive and engaging event will highlight the achievements of those who bring music to life. Taking us from pianist Myra Hess’ performance in London during the Blitz, to John Adams’ composition of a piece for mourners after New York’s 9/11 attacks, to Italian opera singers singing from their balconies amidst the 2020 pandemic, The Life of Music shows that no matter how great the crisis, music has the power to bring us together.
“A typically wise and thoughtful book, which manages to combine a wealth of unexpected information with an immensely readable style – it should grab anybody, whatever their level of musical knowledge.”
— Sir Simon Rattle, music director, London Symphony Orchestra
