It’s the Regency romp that has taken the world by storm! Bridgerton has been a runaway hit, with more than 82 million viewers tuning into Netflix’s period drama in the four weeks following its release on Christmas Day 2020. The sensational storylines, based on the bestselling novels by Julia Quinn, focus on high-society life in the early 1800s. But this is not demure Jane Austen territory. It is costume drama highly stylised to appeal to a 21st century audience — raunchy, with ethnically-diverse casting and a stirring contemporary soundtrack.
Bath plays a leading role in the show, with the city’s elegant Georgian buildings and streets often standing in for London. Seventy scenes, spread over 14 locations, were shot in Bath for the first series — some of the most extensive and ambitious filming ever undertaken in the city.
Professional Blue Badge tour guide Fred Mawer will lead you on an informative and entertaining digital tour of all the key Bridgerton filming locations in Bath. Stops on the tour will include the exteriors of the grand homes of the pushy Featheringtons and scheming Lady Danbury, the gossip-filled Modiste dress makers (in reality a quaint café) and the magnificent Assembly Rooms, appropriately used for some of Bridgerton’s lavish ballroom scenes.
As well as covering the history of the featured buildings and locations, the event will provide insights into the accuracy of Bridgerton’s portrayal of life in Regency England, touch on some behind-the-scenes snippets from the filming and highlight locations of other well-known films and TV shows shot in Bath.
